LANDIS, Alfred G. (Galen) departed this life to join his late wife, Virginia (Ginny) F. (Vandevander), in heaven on January 10, 2018. He was born on March 12, 1928 in Mountain Grove, Missouri to the late Henry and Agnes (Dillworth) Landis.
He was the ninth of eleven children. Al was preceded in death by siblings Edward, Kenneth, Vivian, Ardella, Bessie, Marvin, Charles, Wamette, Joan, and Shirley. He grew up in rural Missouri, but left for Dayton, Ohio to complete his education at Parker Cooperative High School and attend the University of Dayton. Al then took a position at the National Cash Register Company (NCR) where he became a tool maker, and later, a tool designer; eventually, Al was promoted to NCR's Research Division. During the Korean Conflict, he left NCR for two years to serve in the U.S. Army. Upon his return, Al married Ginny on June 6, 1953 and continued to work at NCR until 1974; he then worked for a variety of companies in the tool and die industry before taking a position with General Motors. Al retired in 1993. His favorite past-times included ballroom dancing, playing chess, shooting pool, watching UD Basketball, and card-playing.
Al is survived by son, Jeffrey A. Landis, daughter, Sharon K. Puls, and grandchildren Rachael L. and Robert T. Puls. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Emmanuel Catholic Church, 149 Franklin St., Dayton at 10am with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 9-10am at the church. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of the Miami Valley, 31 W Whipp Rd, Dayton, OH 45459.
