Alice L. Brown

Alice L. Brown, of Oakwood and Kettering, passed away Monday, August 25, 2014. She was born Alice Louise Busby on a farm near Canal Winchester, Ohio. She graduated from Capital University, where she met her husband, Delatus E. Brown ("Del"), who preceded her in death after 60 years of marriage. Alice and Del had no children, but they were devoted to their six nieces who survive: Amanda Busby Griffin, Susanna Busby Chinouth, Marcia Thornton McAdoo, Lisa Thornton, Carla Thornton, and Amy Thornton. Alice is also survived by one cousin, Molly Baker, a sister-in-law, Onna Thornton, and long-time dear friend, Kim Shivers, who doted on Alice and devoted much time to seeing and caring for Alice in her later years. Also preceding her in death was her brother, Jonathan Busby. After graduating from Capital University and undertaking graduate studies at Northwestern and Ohio State Universities, Alice worked for several years as a teacher, focusing on English, speech, and dramatics. Alice's teaching career ended when she married Del in 1942, as teachers were not allowed to be married at that time. Subsequently, Alice and Del moved to Dayton, where Alice contributed to Del's success by managing his ophthalmology practice. At the age of 57, Alice was admitted to the University of Dayton School of Law. Although she did not complete her law degree, Alice later attended Sinclair Community College, where she studied to be a paralegal, and in 1987, Alice became the first paralegal to join the fledging law firm of Sebaly Shillito + Dyer. She was a paralegal and librarian for the firm for 13 years until her retirement at age 84. The lawyers, paralegals, and staff of the law firm became her second family. Alice was always active, both physically and mentally. She and Del loved to travel, and she was an avid golfer. Alice loved to cook, and nothing pleased her more than socializing over a good meal with friends and family. Many of her friends and former law firm colleagues became members of the "Monday Night at Alice's" club. The club members met monthly and included Paige Bartlett, Phyllis Beck, Rosie Goforth, Rochelle Hayes, Patti Highfill, Evie Hogenkamp, Karen Meginnes, Elizabeth Reger, Kim Shivers, Sue Stein, and Lynne Thomas-Roth. Alice was a promoter of the arts in Dayton. She loved attending live performances at the various theaters in town. She supported public television and was proud of the signed picture of Charlie Rose on her side table. Alice liked jazz and good books, and she enjoyed attending many of the educational lectures and seminars at One Lincoln Park. When her sight began to deteriorate, she spent many happy hours listening to books on tape. Alice was smart, stubborn, funny, and, most of all, devoted to those she loved. She will be sadly missed by all whose lives she touched.
