Bruce Elbert Harrison

HARRISON, Bruce Elbert, of Kettering, Ohio, passed away at the age of 76 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. A native of Peoria, Illinois, Bruce attended Peoria High School and graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963-1965, and then received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Houston. Following four years of teaching at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, where he helped found the Master's of Science Program in Psychological Services, Bruce accepted a position as a psychologist at the Dayton Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He worked at the Dayton VA until his retirement in 2004. Bruce was a "man for all seasons" who loved intellectual discussion in the "marketplace of ideas." He was a witty and engaging conversationalist, known for his sense of humor. In his free time, he loved traveling to car races around the country and playing the guitar and piano, especially rhythm and blues. Above all, he was a kind and compassionate man, beloved by his family. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Mary Harrison. He is survived by his wife, Janice, with whom he was three months away from celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. He is also survived by his two daughters, Paula Charlene and Bethany Harrison Rusie (Andy), and three grandchildren: Harrison, Sydney, and Samantha Rusie. The family would like to thank the staff of Lincoln Park Manor and Hospice of Dayton for the special attention and care they provided to Bruce.
