RENCH, Carl Frederick, age 92, of Centerville, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2014 surrounded by his family. Born July 29, 1921 to the late Stanley and Reva (Wilson) Rench, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Constance June (Saring) Rench, and his great grandson, Thomas Fair.
Carl had a full life, filled with experiences and accomplishments that made for great stories. Growing up as a farm boy during the Great Depression in the Troy, Ohio area, he was instantly fascinated when his family finally got electricity. He attended Ohio State University on a scholarship, where he lived in the stadium dorm, played in the marching band and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. He was proud of being a Buckeye, and remained a staunch OSU supporter throughout his life. He was also proud of his service in the Navy, and during World War II served in the Pacific Theater, including Okinawa.
After the war, Carl began his career in electrical engineering with NCR. During his 38 years with the company, he rose to Vice President of Research and Development. He led the development of many new technologies, including computers, ATMs and bar code readers, and helped the company switch from mechanical to electronic products. He traveled nationally and internationally for NCR and the industry, serving on committees of the Computer and Business Equipment Manufacturing Association (CBEMA). A long-time member of the Engineers Club of Dayton, he served on the Club's Board of Directors, and was chairman of the Engineering and Science Foundation board in the early 1980s. He strongly believed in helping young engineers, and was instrumental in starting a program to provide continuing education in electronics. When he had time, he loved to play golf, and was a member of Moraine Country Club and the NCR Country Club.
Left behind to cherish his memory and stories are his son Michael (Sue) Rench; daughters Deborah (Jerry) Sibert and Cathy LaMusga; grandchildren Heather Rench, Micah Rench, Jessica (Adam) Fair; Megan (Andrew) Rodney; Lauren (Chris) Spires and Michelle LaMusga; and great-grandchildren Charlotte Rodney, Preston Fair and his soon-to-be-born namesake Hudson Carl Fair.
