Carl V. Evans, Ltc, Usaf (Ret)

May 29, 1923 — April 8, 2005

EVANS, Carl V., Lieutenant Colonel, USAF Ret., age 81, and long time resident of Kettering, Ohio, passed away Friday, April 8, 2005, as a result of a stroke, March 9, 2004. Beloved husband of Dorothy T. Evans for 57 years; father of Margaret Evans Kuck and David Neal Evans, both of Cincinnati, OH. He was father-in-law to Mary Lou Evans and Richard W. Kuck; grandfather to Elizabeth Evans Kuck, David William Kuck, Abigail Elizabeth Evans and Sally Anne Evans. Carl was born May 29, 1923, in London, Kentucky, to Clyde Overstreet Evans and David Black Evans. He had one brother, Samuel E. Evans, 24 years old, who gave his life in the service of our country over Kiangan Province, China, September4, 1945, and was awarded the Purple Heart, posthumously. Both brothers volunteered in 1942 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Carl served with extraordinary distinction during World War II in the Mediterranean theater, 15th Air Force, flying a P-51 fighter in escort. He flew fifty combat missions and logged 245 flying hours. As a result, he earned The Distinguished Flying Cross – awarded to those who have distinguished themselves in actual combat by “Heroism or Extraordinary” achievement while participating in “Aerial Flight.” Following the war, he attended The University of Kentucky where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Business Administration in 1949. He was selected later to attend “The Institute of Technology”, Wright Patterson AFB, where he was awarded a Master’s degree in Industrial Administration in 1954. There were many other training schools and assignments: He attended Atomic Energy at Keesler AFB and taught there, later, approximately three years. He was stationed at Bryan AFB, near Texas A&M, and had been there before so he became an Aggie again. Overseas, from 1957 to 1960, with his family, he had two assignments: Wiesbaden, Germany and Chateauroux, France, in the Amfea hub with NATO. He was chosen for a year of “Training with Industry” Douglas Air Craft, Santa Monica, CA. He had two assignments at Defense Electronic Supply Center here in Dayton, too. He retired USAF with twenty-five of service in 1967; soon, to return back to Wright Patterson AFB as a Civilian employee. He returned to ASD and held several key positions in “Production and Procurement”, but the “love of his life” was a “Copper-Cap program. There, he selected young college graduates (most likely from The University of Dayton) who desired to work for , and be involved in the Federal: “Civilian & Military” process. So many have continued on, quite successfully, to his satisfaction and delight. He, once again, retired as a civil service employee on May 23, 1985, and now was characterized by strong devotion to “family” and for that he will be deeply missed. Having two grandchildren at Notre Dame he found another affection other than U.K. and proudly wore his N.D. cap and tie. He and his wife have proudly traveled with our family to Yosemite, Boston for 4th July Pops, Macy’s Thanksgiving in New York, many trips to Disneyworld, one cruise, and maybe more. These years were “Golden” for us. Memorial services will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, 3440 Shroyer Rd., Kettering, Ohio on Friday, April 22, 2005, where he and Dottie are longstanding members since 1960. His family will be happy to greet friends there from 10 AM to 11 AM at which time the memorial service will begin in the sanctuary and continue until noon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SICSA, 2600 Wilmington Pike Kettering, OH 45419 or Disabled American Veterans & Families, P.O. Box 14301 Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
