WHITAKER, Charles Darden, age 83 of Washington Twp., passed away on Friday, August 17, 2012. He was born July 9, 1929 in Minneapolis, MN. Charles received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech and an MBA from University of Dayton. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War and was a Mason, Shriner and member of AASR.
Charles served on the Centerville City School Board and was a founder of "Soaring Sounds", the national drum and bugle competition held at Centerville High School. He was the owner of DSS, Dayton Speedometer Service. Charles spent many hours volunteering at Hospice of Dayton and Kettering Hospital where his hard work was appreciated by many. He was a member of Normandy United Methodist Church for over 40 years and was deeply devoted to his faith. A gracious gentleman at all times, Charles will be missed by all who knew him.
Preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Whitaker; sister, Sally Porter; and his parents Jeff and Anna Whitaker. Charles is survived by his daughter, Lynda Whitaker-Luethke; sons, Darden (Debbie) Whitaker and Donald Whitaker; grandchildren, Dwayne, Cassie, Allen and Davis; and numerous nieces, nephews and very close friends.
Family will greet friends on Monday, August 20, 2012 from Noon-2:00pm at Normandy United Methodist Church, 450 West Alex Bell Road, Dayton, OH. Funeral service to follow at 2:00pm with Rev. Jim Riggs officiating. Burial to follow in David's Cemetery.
