JAY, Charles E., age 83, retired architect of Oakwood, passed away at home on Wednesday, January 3rd. He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Edwin Jay and Nelle (Martindale) Jay and a brother, Edwin D. Jay. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marjorie; two daughters, Julie McCracken of Del Mar, CA and Carrie Rogge of Kettering; a sister, Maryellen Wright of Celina, OH; a son-in-law, Lee McCracken; grandchildren, Leslie and Alex McCracken, and numerous nieces and great-nieces and nephews and great-nephews, and a host of dear friends. A native of West Milton, OH, he graduated from Milton-Union High School and The Ohio State University, where he was a member of the marching band. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II and spent nearly three years overseas in England, France, and Belgium. After college he worked for the architectural firm of Yount and Sullivan, which later became Sullivan, Lecklider and Jay (now known as the firm Pinnacle Architects). His major architectural projects include Kettering Medical Center, the Dayton International Airport, Sinclair Community College (associate architects with the firm of Edward Durell Stone), buildings at Wright State University, Mead Data Center (Lexus-Nexus), libraries, schools, and corporate office buildings. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, serving as chapter president in 1972-1973. He also was a member of the Engineers Club of Dayton and served on its Board of Governors, 1977-1980. He played trumpet in the Kettering Civic Band for over 30 years and sometimes played with the TBDBITL alumni band at OSU, always returning to play and march with them on alumni reunion days at football games. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and a member of Masonic Lodge #577. Memorial services will be held at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 East Stroop Road, Kettering, OH on Saturday, January 6th at 11 AM with the Rev. Don Frederick officiating. There will be no visitation, and interment will be private. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Milton-Union High School Scholarship Fund (c/o Milton-Union Alumni Association, Inc., P.O. Box 383, West Milton, OH 45383).
