Charles Franklin Martin

April 15, 1919 — September 23, 2000

age 81 of Kettering, formerly of Oakwood, died Saturday, September 23, 2000. He was the son of the late Charles Russell and Bessie (Boedeker) Martin. Charles was a graduate of Oakwood High School in 1937 and Purdue University in 1941, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He also attended Harvard Business School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II. Following the war, he was a partner with his father in the Miami Fertilizer Company, which later became a division of International Minerals and Chemicals Corp. Later, he became the owner and operator of Scarff-Martin Seed Company in New Carlisle, Ohio. He later joined the Dayton Blueprint Company. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he was a treasurer for many years and a Deacon and an Elder. He was a past Committee Chairman of Dayton YMCA Camp Kern, past Trustee of the Dayton Automobile Club and a member of the AAA Advisory Board of Dayton. Charles served as past President of the Rotary Club of Dayton, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the George C. Marshall Masonic Lodge, Valley of Dayton Scottish Rite, Antioch Temple Shrine and the Junto Club. He was Preceded in death by daughter, Nancy Martin Kennedy, and son, Charles Scarff Martin. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Ellen Scarff Martin; daughter, Mary Martin Bordner (Scott) of Maryland; and sons, David Franklin Martin of Kentucky and Paul Dandridge Martin of Columbus; son-in-law, Michael Kennedy, his wife, Dawn, and son, Kevin of Phoenix, AZ. Also survived by his grandchildren, Jennifer and Robert Charles (Rusty) Kennedy, Hannah, Joshua and Haley Bordner; and sisters, Phyllis Martin Erbaugh (James), Suzanne Martin MacCallum (Charles) and Francis Martin Miller (Howard). A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Wilkinson St., Dayton. The family will meet friends immediately after the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. A private burial service will be held at Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Wilkinson St., Dayton OH 45402, or the Dayton YMCA, Camp Kern, Attn: Debbie Merderman, 316 N. Wilkinson, Dayton OH 45402.
