Dolores "Do" Winkler Wagner

Dolores "Do" (Emrod) Winkler Wagner, of Kettering, formerly of Oakwood, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2014, after a 30-year battle with cancer and one week after her 85th birthday. She was born in Indianapolis, Ind. on July 28, 1929, and graduated from Lash High School in Zanesville, Ohio. Dolores received her BA in fine arts and theatre from Marietta College and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She worked at a radio station in Columbus, Ohio, where she met her first husband, Ralph H. Winkler. In 1962 they moved to Dayton where her husband established the Skywrighter newspaper for WPAFB. Later, Dolores and her family started The Oakwood Register, which remained her pet project until her last very days. Over the years, Dolores was involved with numerous organizations, especially the arts. She was past president of the Dayton Opera Guild, season ticket holder and supporter of Dayton Opera, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and Human Race Theatre. Dolores was one of the first female members to join Oakwood Rotary Club, previously an all-men's club. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, Women's Literary Club, several bridge groups and a gourmet club. She loved cooking for friends and family. Books and music filled her home. She enjoyed traveling to experience opera in New York and around the world. Preceded in death by her parents Mary Saliba and Alex Herbert Emrod and her first husband Ralph H. Winkler. She is survived by her second husband of twelve years, Jack Wagner; sister, Phyllis Bomas; brother, Herbert Alex Emrod; daughter, Dana Whitney Steinke and her husband Mark; son, Lance A. Winkler and his wife Lidiya; granddaughter, Emma Whitney; grandsons, Ralph Alexander Winkler and Alfred James Winkler; nieces, Kristen Bomas and Marcie Behman; stepchildren, Susan Mooney; Molly Bowater and her husband Steve; Doug Wagner and his wife Lori; seven step-grandchildren; and longtime friends, Ann Dennison and Margie Bridstrup. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 8, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 33 West Dixon Ave. in Oakwood, with The Reverend Canon John F. Koepke III officiating. The family will receive friends at Dayton Country Club, 555 Kramer Rd. following church service.
