Watkins, Donald B., LTC (Ret.), age 88, of Dayton, went home to be with his Lord, peacefully and surrounded by love and his family on Friday, April 15, 2005. He served in the South Pacific during WWII in New Guinea and the Philippines, and Okinawa during the Korean War. Donald graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1934 where he was on the first State Championship basketball team. He was a member of Denison University Athletic Hall of Fame, earning letters in football, baseball and basketball. Donald graduated from Denison University in 1938 and was a life member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He retired from New York Life after 30 years as a CLU agent. Donald was a member of Grace Methodist and Christ Methodist Church. Preceded in death by parents, Hjalmar and Esther Taurianan; adopted stepfather, Howard Watkins; brothers, Howard and Lawrence; and sister, Luella McCord. Donald is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nettie Delight Watkins; daughter and son-in-law, Gail & Linden Carter of Wilmington, OH; son and daughter-in-law, Steven & Sebia Watkins of San Diego, CA; 4 grandchildren: Jessica, Emily, Matthew, Colton; 5 great-grandchildren; sister, June Mock of Florida; sister-in-law, Joan Watkins of Florida; brother-in-law, J.E. Miller of Fairborn, OH and 5 nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 19 at David’s Cemetery in Kettering. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Amvets; The Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Ste. 1700, Chicago, IL 60601; or Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45420.
