HOELAND, Donald Earl, age 91, passed away on August 24, 2012 at Kettering Medical Center. Don, the son of Florence Requarth and Raymond W. Hoeland, was born on March 9, 1921, in Dayton. He was a graduate of Fairview High School, Class of 1939 and Duke University, Class of 1943. Upon graduation from college, he enlisted in the Navy; and after completing officer training at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, he shipped out to England but not before marrying his high school sweetheart Jeane Hering on September 18, 1943 in Ithaca. While stationed in England, Don participated in the Normandy Invasion landing a small craft for offloading tanks onto Omaha Beach on "D Day", June 6, 1944.
After the War, Don returned to Dayton where he started his family and his business career. Initially he worked as a CPA for several accounting firms. Subsequently he joined the F.A. Requarth Lumber Company where he became an officer and principal before retiring in 1978.
Don was a devoted husband to Jeane throughout their 62 year marriage and a caregiver in her final years consumed by Alzheimer's. Don and Jeane had two children, James Halleck and Ann Louise. Don was a supportive father who through his love of sports especially golf imparted to Ann and Hal many of life's lessons and values. Don's colleagues and many friends appreciated him for his dry sense of humor, his loyalty, and his fundamental decency.
Don was predeceased by his brother James W. Hoeland. He is survived by his daughter Ann H. Walkup and Ann's husband Bill, his son Hal and Hal's wife May and four grandsons, Alex and Eric Allen, and Jimmy and Chris Hoeland.
