Donald I. Greene

Captain Donald I. Greene, age 82, Centerville, Ohio, passed away after a battle with Alzheimer's and Dementia. Don was born in Cranston, RI on September 18, 1933 to the late Raymond N. and Ethel Leota Greene. He graduated from Cranston High School, RI and joined the U.S. Air Force where he served his country with honor in the Korean War. Donald met and married Jeanne 'Cynthia' (Barker) Greene and went on to have three children. After settling in Ledyard, he coached his son in baseball for many years. He opened his successful business in Stonington called P&B Office Machines, of CT. He loved the ocean and boating, so much that he joined The Westerly Yacht Club. In 1981, he purchased his first sailboat, The Frosting, and he and his family went on the water, travelling to Block Island, Martha's Vineyard and other beautiful locations on the East Coast. He loved vacationing in the Virgin Islands copiloting large sailing vessels with his cousin Bob. Together with their wives and friends they sailed to all the "not so well known islands". He and Cyndy were active members in the Yacht Club for many years . He became Commodore in 1991. Don joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary where he achieved the rank of Master Sargent. He taught boating classes through the Coast Guard and enjoyed every minute of it. Furthering his love of the water he achieved the rank of Captain in the Merchant Marine. He loved getting calls at all hours of the night, to navigate the big barges into the local dock. Donald is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jeanne Greene, a daughter Kerrie L. Soares and her husband Michael Soares, Sr of Centerville, OH., a son David B. Greene and his wife Erica (Farmer) Greene of Centerville, OH and a daughter Kristen D. Venditti and her husband Louis Venditti, Jr of Groton, CT. He leaves a Sister, Carolyn Laine of Bonita Springs, FL, 8 grandchildren whom he loved to spend time with, talking, playing musical instruments passing on his love of boating, Emily Gumbs, Heather (Greene) Owens and her husband Chris Owens, Louis Venditti, III, James Venditti, Hannah Gumbs, Kelly Venditti, Raymond Greene and Allison Venditti. Services will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2015, 3pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave., Dayton (Oakwood), OH 45419 and Friday, November 13th, 1PM at the Westerly Yacht Club, 1 Watch Hill Road, Westerly, RI 02891.
