Dorothy M. Cummings

CUMMINGS, Dorothy Jean (Mullen), age 83, of Oakwood, passed away on February 23, 2017. She was born on July 29, 1933 in Detroit, MI to Siegfried and Josephine Mullen. Dorothy graduated from Oakwood High School Class of 1951, a cheerleader and played on the Field Hockey team. She was a Girl Scout Leader at the age of 19 and sent her troop to Europe. Dorothy was active in many Goodwill programs including Antique Potpourri, the Folk Art Show and was a founding member of the Junior Guild of Goodwill industries. She organized the Patterson Homestead Antique Show, was a member of the Oakwood Historical Society and was on the Montgomery County Historical Society Board. Dorothy was a member of The Junior League of Dayton, Dayton History and the Hillside Garden Club. She gave lectures on flower arranging to many garden clubs. She advocated for a Drug Free Society for her community at the local Ice Cream Store in Oakwood. Many will remember Dorothy as "The Rug Lady", an expert and lecturer on Antique Oriental Rugs. Also, Dorothy was a friend of Bill W for 39 years. It was said by a friend, "She saved my Live". She is survived by her loving husband, Dr Richard "Dick" Cummings: children, Dawn Glaspey (Wendell), Bellbrook, Richard Cummings (Michael Edwards) Atlanta, GA, Joan Creager Folz (Leonard) Kettering, Joel Creager Hatmaker Oakwood, and Jessica Cummings Urteaga (Anibal) Oakwood and Peru; 4 grandsons and 4 granddaughters; 5 great-grandsons and 6 great-granddaughters; and sister, Mary Ann "Moon" Price of Michigan and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Christ United Methodist Church, 3440 Shroyer Rd, Kettering. Interment at Woodland Mausoleum. The family will receive friends following the entombment, for fellowship and tours at the Brewery at Carillon Park, 1000 Carillon Blvd, Dayton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dayton History Foundation, 1000 Carillon Blvd, Dayton, OH 45409 or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 70 Birch Alley #240, Beavercreek, OH 45440.
