Dr. Alfred Hicks II of Dayton died at Bethany Rehabilitation Center on Monday, March 7, 2005. He was born on January 17, 1920 in Denver, Colorado. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, a son, Alfred Hicks III of Denver, a daughter, Vaughn Hicks of Beaufort, SC and a sister, Virginia Hicks Broun of Denver, many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred C. Hicks and Virginia Hicks and a brother, Richard C. Hicks, all of Denver. Dr. Hicks was a graduate of Kemper Military Academy, attended the University of Michigan and graduated from the University of Colorado with a medical degree in 1946. Followed by an internship at Rhode Island Hospital and Residency at Denver Children's Hospital, he practiced pediatrics in Denver from 1949 to 1966, except for a two year commitment to the Army Medical Corps, where as a Captain, he served as Chief of Pediatrics at Fort Sill, OK. His avocation during his pediatric career was the care of children with birth injury, especially cerebral palsy. He served as the Director of Pediatric Education at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver from 1966-69. In 1969, he accepted a position at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH to assist in the development of high risk neonatal and obstetrical programs. He developed the first Intensive Care Nursery in 1970 and was instrumental in the planning and development of the McIntire Perinatal Center. In 1975 he was appointed as the Chairman of the Directors of Education at Miami Valley Hospital with responsibility for provision of post-graduate education to residents in eight speciality residency programs and continuing education to members of the Attending Staff at Miami Valley Hospital. Dr. Hicks was a co-producer of Medical Hotline, a five day a week live TV Program for consumer education on WHIO TV for five years and served on the National Ad Hoc Committee for Perinatal Health as one of four representatives from the AMA Committee on Maternal and Child Health and was Chairman of the Area Wide Medical Care Evaluation Committee Region II PSRO in Dayton. He was a surveyor for the Ohio State Medical Association's Continuing Medical Education Accreditation and served on the Miami Valley Hospital Medical Staff Executive Committee. He sat on the Board of United Cerebral Palsy, the Gordon Hewitt Ayres Committee and United Rehabilitation Services who honored him with the Dr. Harold F. Hilty Humanitarian Award in 1993 and the Thomas Bankston Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. Dr. Hicks was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics for many years as well as the American Academy of Physician Executives. He was a member of the Denver Medical society, Colorado Medical Society, the Rocky Mountain Pediatric Society, the Western Ohio Pediatric Society, the Montgomery County Medical Society and the Ohio State Medical Association. Hobbies included golf, stamp collecting and skiing. He was a member of the Denver Country Club for many years and the Dayton Country Club. The family would like to thank the staff at Miami Valley Hospital RIO Unit and Bethany Rehabilitation Center for the loving care, compassion and friendship. A memorial services will take place on Thursday, March 10, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Routsong Funeral Home.
