PORTER, Dr. Dale, died January 19th, 2012 at Kettering Memorial Hospital. He was born February 5th, 1922 in Hastings, Nebraska son of Daniel and Nelle Porter. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Judith Markley Porter. He was proceded in death by his beloved daughter Susan Hermann, sister Jean Cruikshank, and brother Dr. John Porter. He is survived by his children Cynthia Porter Jacobs, Dr. Thomas Dale Porter, Scott Radford Porter, Lisa Plattenburg and son-in law James Plattenburg. Grandchildren Leslie Ann Jacobs, Daniel Allen Jacobs of Dayton, Ohio, Brooke Hermann Farrar (Chip), Micaela Hermann Heuglin (Joey), Alea Hermann Feeley (Frank) all of Cape Coral, Florida, his great-grandchildren Sydney Sage Farrar, Brady Dale Farrar, Jacoby Hunter Feeley, Lila Susan Feeley, Anistyn Susan Heuglin. He is survived by his sisters-in-law Susan Fornshell of Dayton, Ohio and Doris Porter of Lincoln, Nebraska as well as several very special neices and nephews.
Following graduation from University of Nebraska Medical School and internship at Indiana University Medical Center he was stationed at Keesler Field where he was a Flight Surgeon and ulitimately became Chief of Surgery. Following his years in the Army Air Corps he entered Residency training in General and Thoracic Surgery at Indiana University Medical Center. This was followed by Residency in Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery at the University of Michigan. He then was offered the honor to spend a year in London, England as a Registrar for Sir Russel Brock , famed Heart Surgeon at Brompton Hospital. He returned in 1958 and opened practice of Thoracic Cardiac and Cardiovascular Surgery in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Porter was a pioneer in Open Heart Surgery, he performed Dayton's first Open Heart Surgery in 1959 at Good Samaritan Hospital.
He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Board Certified Member of the American College of Surgeons, Board Certified Member of the American College of Thoracic Surgeons, Founding Member of Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a member of John Alexander Society, The American Medical Association, The Montgomery County Medical Association, and Associate Professor at Wright State University Medical School.
The caring, steadfast love of a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather will be forever missed. His was a life well-lived. There will be a private family memorial service at a later date. Contributions may be made to a charity of your choice or enjoy another round of golf for him.
