Dr. William Joseph West

passed away Friday, May 11, 2001. Dr. West was born in Chillicothe, Ohio, March 10, 1916. He was a graduate from Chillicothe High School, Ohio Wesleyan University where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, and Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia where he was a member of Phi Chi Fraternity. Dr. West served his internship and surgical residency at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was in charge of the Polio Surgical and Rehabilitation Center at the Army-Navy hospital in Hot Springs, AK. Dr. West was in general medical practice from 1947-1951 in Dayton and had his orthopedic surgical residency at the University of Michigan, where he was Senior Clinical Instructor of Orthopedic Surgery. He started his orthopedic surgical practice in 1955 and founded Far Oaks Orthopedists, Inc. which he headed until his retirement from surgery in 1983. Until 1998, he practiced as an independent orthopedic consultant. Dr. West was board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Ohio State Medical Association, the Ohio State Orthopedic Society, the Tri State Orthopedic Society, the Dayton Orthopedic Society, the Mid American Orthopedic Society, and the Montgomery County Medical Society. He was Chief of Staff of Kettering Medical Center as well as Barney Hospital (now Children's Medical Center). Dr. West was on the medical staff of Miami Valley Hospital, Kettering Medical Center, St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, Greene Memorial Hospital and Children's Medical Center. he was an Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Wright State University School of Medicine. He was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church, the Oakwood Fir Fin and Feather Club, the Slagle Trout Club, the Dayton Country Club, the Centerville Rod and Reel Club, the Hiawatha Sportsmen's Club, the Criterion Club, and the Bicycle Club. Preceded in death by his mother and father, Nellie and William Seney West; and a sister, Catharine. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Jeannette; a sister, Eleanor Wood of Chillicothe; 2 sons, William Joseph West Jr. of Scottsdale, AZ and Douglas Hetzel West, M.D. and his wife, Juetta of Kaanapali, Maui, HI; 2 daughters, Marsha Kay West and Cynthia West Langton and her husband, Scott of Dayton; 7 grandchildren, Douglass, Danielle, Jack, William Joseph III, Christopher, Bennett and Elliott; and a great grandson, Taylor. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Wilkinson St., Dayton with Rev. Kay Dudding officiating. The family will greet friends from 4-8:00 P.M., Monday at the Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering.
