COFFEY, Editha "Edie", born on February 1, 1935 to parents, Paul and Charlotte Prochnow in Mirow, Germany, passed away after a brief illness on August 7, 2016 surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Prochnow; mother, Charlotte Prochnow; and sister, Lisa Prochnow. She is survived by her children, Hans (Elyse) Coffey of Centerville, Petra Boyce of Germany, Rick Coffey of Dayton, Bryan (Lisa) Coffey of Kettering, Kent Coffey of Centerville, Colleen (Steve) Widmeyer of Huber Heights and Chris Coffey of Centerville; 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Edie experienced a very full life.
She was a young teen during post-World War II in Germany and would captivate any audience with the stories of her experiences during this time. It was in Germany where she had her first two children, Hans and Petra, born of father, Hans Funck. After settling with her parents in West Berlin, she met and married Richard M. Coffey, an American serviceman, with whom she had five children, Rick, Bryan, Kent, Colleen and Chris. It was marriage that led her to coming to this country and making her home in Dayton, OH. She was exceptionally proud to have earned her American citizenship and so loved the United States. Edie retired from the University of Dayton in 2000 after twenty-two years of service, where she was a student supervisor in the Housekeeping division.
She strived hard to instill a strong work ethic and values into each student who worked for her. She shared many stories with her own family about her experiences at working with the students. She was genuinely fond of them. She so loved Dayton Flyers basketball, and followed each team over the years. If the game was not televised, she would listen to it on her radio. She enjoyed her timeshare in Florida and annual gathering with so many great friends with whom she became very close over the years. She enjoyed her weekly pilgrimage to the Second Street Market and Charlie's Import Foods, for her flowers, rye bread and German deli meats.
Edie will be greatly missed by her loving family and many dear friends.
