Ellie (Evans) Barhorst

Barhorst, Ellie (Evans) age 87, of Kettering, formerly of Middletown, OH passed away Sunday, November 24, 2024. Ellie was born January 14, 1937 in Middletown, OH to the late John Isadore and Margaret Louise (Murphy) Evans. She graduated from Middletown Fenwick High School and went on to Good Samaritan College earning an RN degree as well as the University of Dayton earning a Master’s Degree in Teaching. She taught nursing at the University of New Mexico and finished her career at Miami Valley Hospital in Preadmission Testing. Ellie met her husband, Carl, at the University of Dayton. Together, they were life-long members of the Church of the Ascension. In her free time, she loved to quilt, play bridge, euchre, and Dayton Flyer Basketball games. Ellie enjoyed traveling with her family, especially visiting Europe, Australia, and Asia, but most special to her were the trips around the US with her beloved family. Ellie was always energetic and infectious with her conversations as she never met a stranger. Her kind and loving demeanor will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Ellie is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Carl A. Barhorst and infant son, Mark Barhorst.

She is survived by her children, Jean Garboden, Matt (Melissa) Barhorst, and Eric (Erin) Barhorst; grandchildren, Carly, Madeline, Catherine, and Carl M. Barhorst, and Erica, Jack, and Mitchell Garboden; and numerous extended family and friends. 

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Leonard’s Nursing Home for the excellent medical care they all provided Ellie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00AM on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at Church of the Ascension. A visitation will be held prior at the church from 9:00AM to 10:00AM. Burial in Old St. Michael’s Cemetery in Ft. Loramie, OH following the Mass.  Memorial contributions may be made in Ellie’s name to Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45420, or Church of the Ascension, 2025 Woodman Dr, Kettering, OH 45420.
