ZACHARIAS, Frank, age 92, of Kettering passed away on Wednesday, August 03, 2011.
For those of us who knew and loved him, Frank was our Superman. Larger than life and able to answer the question, repair the object, or invent the solution to your problem. Always willing to help anyone, friend or stranger. Born August 24, 1918 in Berea, Ohio and moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1951.
Frank served as a Staff Sgt. in the Army Air Corps during WWII in China-Burma-India Theater, where he was awarded a bronze star for his invention used in the truck corps. He retired from channel 7 WHIO-TV and radio as a transmitter engineer after thirty years. Frank worked with local inventor, Jack Janning on numerous electronic projects. He was an amateur radio operator “extra class” since 1953 and a member of the Antique Radio Club “Sparks”.
Frank was a graduate of National Radio School in Cleveland, Ohio and Normoyel Auto School in Texas. He gardened and grew vegetables for his entire extended family, neighbors, and friends. Last year he and his wife were still canning the bounty. Frank was a charter member of Ascension Catholic Church. He was a devoted volunteer for numerous projects at the church, most recently serving at funerals. Frank was a Leisure Club member. He was a tournament bowler and continued to bowl twice a week until the spring of 2011. Frank loved the sport as well as the friendships that meant so much to him. He also began biking with the “Cycle-Paths” through the Lathrem Center at the age of 80 and up until recently. His biking buddies meant the world to him. Frank’s grandchildren brought out the best in him, from camping, swimming and sports to kite flying and lessons in electricity and physics.
Thank you Frank for everything you have done for all of us.
Preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Zacharyasz and Mary Mahjer; sister, Theresa Zacharyasz and brothers, Stanley Zacharyasz and Benedict “Lefty” Zacharyasz.
