SMITH, Frederick Coe, age 93 of Washington Twp., passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2010. Fred graduated from Cornell University and Harvard Business School. He served his country in the Army Air Corps where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1941. During WWII he came to Wright Patterson AFB to work on its budget committee. After the war, Frederick worked for the Huffy Corporation where he went from marketing manager to president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board. He retired from Huffy in 1976 after 30 years of service. Frederick's passion has been community service. His list of board memberships may be a regional record. He has been chair of the boards of The Dayton Foundation, Sinclair Community College, and Miami Valley Hospital and served as president of the United Way of Dayton. Both the Ohio Association of Social Workers and the National Association of Social Workers named him Citizen of the year in 1985. He received the Regional Trustee of the Year Award from the Association of Community College Trustees and the list goes on. The President's Club of Dayton, which gave him its Citizen Legion of Honor Award, said Frederick's leadership has affected many organizations as well as thousands of Miami Valley residents in health care, education and social services. He was a driving force behind the establishment of the Job Center and ISUS School and founded the Sinclair Foundation. Preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Pfeiffer Smith on April 14, 2004. Frederick is survived by his children, Frederick "Eric" (Gay) Smith, III of Sidney, OH; Geoffrey "Geoff" Smith of Boston, MA; Roger (Betsy) Smith of Vienna, VA; William "Bill" (Kiki) Smith of Lake Forest, IL; and J. Bartlett "Bart" Kemp Smith of London, England; his brother, Amos Steffee Smith of Pennsylvania; 14 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 nephews and 3 nieces. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 1:00PM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave., Oakwood, OH. The family will greet friends following the service.
