WILLIAMS, Frederick Prichard, “Fred”, age 90, of Kettering passed away Sunday, August 7, 2011.
Born in Huntington WV, he was a 1939 graduate of Huntington High School. Fred received a BS in Chemical Engineering (1943) from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh (now Carnegie Mellon University). After a long career in the Dayton area, he retired from Monarch Marking Systems, Inc., but previously held engineering positions at NCR and Monsanto. During part of his career he also managed a small company. His years of service as a chemical engineer resulted in many patents in his name.
During WWII, he worked on projects for the National Defense Research Committee and Office of Scientific Research and Development. It was one of those projects that led him to Dayton in 1944 where he became engaged in the development of rocket propellants for use in launching the JB-2 (“Jet Bomb 2”) surface to surface guided missile. During his career, Fred had been a member of the Engineers Club of Dayton and the American Chemical Society. He was also a registered sanitarian and served locally with the Selective Service System.
After retirement in 1983, he traveled extensively with Margie, his wife of 63 years. They also served Meals on Wheels within the local community and enjoyed meeting friends at nearby Central Perc and First Watch cafes.
After Margie’s passing in 2008, Fred enjoyed the company of his friends and family and was frequently found at the Lathrem Senior Citizens Center. Fred was a long time member of Fairmont Presbyterian Church in Kettering.
He was preceded in death by his wife Margery Williams, daughter Carol Anne Williams, sister Regina Foley, and brother Richard Williams. He is survived by his son Fred (Lena) Williams, Jr. and their son Frederick Williams, III, of Cincinnati; son Robert Williams of St. Paul, MN; and sister Edna Linn Shriner of Raleigh, NC.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for the recent care provided by the staff of the Lincoln Park Manor in Kettering, the Episcopal Homes of Minnesota, and the visitation of Fred’s many friends.
