NEWSOME, Garland Jr., "Big Daddy", age 82, passed away on Friday, January 25, 2012.
He was born on October 22, 1930 in Gilmer, TX to the late Garland Sr. and Grace Newsome. Garland served during the Korean War in the 82nd Airborne as a Paratrooper. He retired after 31 years from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 1981.
Garland owned Slim Weigh Health Club, Newsome Market, Modern Day Cleaning Service & Snow Removal, Big Mama's BBQ, Big Daddy's Car Lot and several other businesses. He was a member of the Miami Valley Dealers Association for 12 years and liked to volunteer as Safety Patrol for Dayton Public Schools.
During his spare time, Garland loved to fish and work in his garden.
Proceeded in death by his son, Kennard Newsome. Garland is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Juanita; brother, John Edward Newsome of Gilmer, TX; son, Taji (Robin) Newsome of Dayton, OH; daughters, Carolyn Purce of Dayton, OH, Jennifer Newsome (Joseph) Klotz of Cincinnati, OH and Autumn Vargas of Wilmington, OH; 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; one uncle, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and children who held a special place in his heart, Bertha Davenport of Dayton, OH, Deon Benson of Dayton, OH, Eleanor Newsome of Las Vegas, NV, Rachel and Norris Carpenter, James and Jacob Ward, and Jed and Julius Carpenter.
Family will greet friends from 4:00-7:00pm on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 East Stroop Road, Kettering. A celebration of life will be held at 10:00am on Friday, February 1, 2013 also at the funeral home. Burial in Dayton VA Cemetery.
