OBERER, George R. Sr., age 88, of Washington Township, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2016. George R. Oberer Sr. graduated from Chaminade High School in 1944, was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946, graduated from the University of Dayton in 1949 and received a MS degree from Michigan State University in 1951. Mr. Oberer and his father initiated a small excavating firm in 1949 that developed into a large heavy construction company, building water projects, sewers, highways, golf courses and reservoirs in five states. George Sr. was President and CEO from the company's inception. In the early 1960's the firm expanded into real estate development and home building. In the early 1970's the firm again expanded into commercial development. The company, now recognized as Oberer Companies, has built thousands of homes, numerous multi-family developments, condominium communities, many golf courses, shopping centers, office buildings and the Houston Woods Lodge. Mr. Oberer held a real estate broker's license. He is the winner of the prestigious Robert McDaniel's Award, honoring a lifetime contribution to the development and home building industry in the Dayton Area. He also won the Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Dayton/Miami Valley in 1996. In addition, Mr. Oberer served on the Lexford Board of Directors from 1992 to 1999 and was on the United Rehabilitation Services Fund Raising Committee for the development of their new facility. Mr. Oberer is a member of the Alexis Tocqueville Society, Miami Valley Economic Development Coalition, the Dayton Alliance, Home Builders Association, and the Dayton Area Board of Realtors. He was a member of the Eagles Group which is supported by the Republican Party. Mr. Oberer had a deep political knowledge and an opinion to go with it. Four of Mr. Oberer's six children are actively involved in Oberer Companies. His son George R. Oberer Jr. serves as CEO, son Michael Oberer is Vice-President of Oberer Land Developers, Ltd., daughter Jackie Koogler is Director of Property Management, and daughter Shelly Edge is a Property Manager. Mr. Oberer continued to play an active role as Chairman of the Board until 2006.
Mr. Oberer had a passion for flying and was an instrument rated pilot. He was known for flying into Cuba in the 1950's. Mr. Oberer landed as an enemy but took off with many friends in Cuba. He loved boating on the Ohio River and enjoyed day trading and Vegas gambling. Mr. Oberer had numerous bird houses in his back yard and spent hours studying the birds that would visit. He was an avid Michigan State and UD Basketball fan and was one of the main contributors to the University of Dayton.
Mr. Oberer is preceded in death by his first wife, Bernie Oberer in 1974, and his second wife, Betty Oberer in 2012. He is survived by his children, George (Amy) Oberer Jr. of Beavercreek, Patty (Brad) Grubb of Vandalia, Cheri (John) Seidenschmidt of North Carolina, Jackie (Dave Mason) Koogler of Tipp City, Shelly (Dave) Edge of Kettering, and Mike (Tonya) Oberer of Washington Township; and 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
The family will greet friends from 4:00-8:00pm on Thursday, March 31, 2016 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 East Stroop Road, Kettering. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Friday, April 1, 2016 at Church of the Incarnation, 7415 Far Hills Avenue, Centerville. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Dayton Area Chapter, 1313 W. Dorothy Lane, Kettering, OH 45409.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Dr. C. David Joffe and his wife Susan and the staff at the Dayton Heart Hospital at Good Samaritan Hospital.
