THORPE, Gerald E., age 93, died on Thursday, January 29, 2015 in Inverness, FL. Gerald was born at home in Tallega, KY on April 5, 1921 to Sherman and Alpha Thorpe.
He graduated from Lee Jr. College and taught school in a one-room school house. At the outbreak of WWII, he volunteered and served in Europe in General Patton's 3rd Army. After the war he moved to Dayton, OH, where he resided for the rest of his life. He retired from General Motors.
Gerald was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine (Deaton) Thorpe, second wife, Ella Mae (PIng) Thorpe, 6 brothers and 3 sisters.
He is survived by children, Ron (Peggy) Thorpe, Steve Thorpe, Cheryl (David) Ernst and Larry (Melinda) Ping; grandchildren, Jim (Tina) Ping, Teresa (Tim) Profitt, Melanie (Tabb) Lindeman, Ronnie (Dee Karn) Thorpe and Don (Bobbie Crank) Walters. Gerald has 10 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, James (Jean) Thorpe, sisters-in-law, Zenith Thorpe, Eeda McEntee and many beloved nieces and nephews. Gerald will always be remembered for his kindness and love of family.
Family will greet friends from 5:00-7:00pm on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd. Kettering. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, February 6, 2015 at the funeral home. Gerald will be laid to rest at Woodland Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in Gerald's memory to any Veteran's organization, if desired.
