MARTIN, Gilbert R., age 88, of Oakwood, passed away Sunday, October 19, 2003 at Bethany Lutheran Village, Centerville. Gilbert attended Westminster Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir for 48 years. He was a 1938 graduate of DePauw University, IN and received his master’s degree in 1939 from Boston University. Gilbert was the director of the Oakwood YMCA and taught in the Kettering School system for 17 years. Since 1982 he volunteered at Miami Valley Hospital. Gilbert was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie in 1998, his brother, Willard and sister, Jeanette. He is survived by 3 sons; John (Christy) Martin, Steve (Carla) Martin, both of Yellow Springs and Peter (Suzanne) Martin of Bellbrook; 2 daughters, Susan Crocker of Syracuse, NY and Catherine (Warren) McCrummen of Jonesboro, GA; 1 brother, Neil Martin of Marshalltown, IA; 2 sisters, Alice Rowley of Atlantic, IA and Luanna Strickland of Odenton, MD; and 6 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 25 at 12:30 PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Wilkinson St., Dayton with Rev. Glenn Leupold officiating. In memory of Gilbert, contributions may be made to the Music Fund at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Wilkinson St., Dayton, OH 45402.
