MURPHY, Gordon K., age 84, of Dayton, OH, passed away on March 7, 2024. Gordon was born on October 17, 1939 in Alliance, OH to the late Paul and Alice (nee Norwood) Murphy. At a young age his family moved to Athens, OH where he attended Athens High School, graduating in 1957. Gordon continued his education at Ohio University, earning his B.A. in Zoology in 1961. Gordon then studied medicine at the University of Cincinnati, graduating with his M.D in 1965, and was also inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society. Prior to graduating from medical school, Gordon married M. Maureen Hocter, on March 20, 1965, a loving marriage which spanned almost fifty years. Immediately following his internship at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Gordon was commissioned as a Captain in the US Air Force, where he served honorably as a Physician until 1968. After completing his military service, Gordon, Maureen and their first child moved to Dayton, OH, where Gordon began his long career as a Pathologist. Over his 30 year medical career, Gordon held positions at Miami Valley Hospital, the Montgomery County Coroner’s office, and the Baltimore County, MD Coroner’s office, before his retirement in 1996. Over the course of his career, Gordon was well known for writing scholarly medical articles, and was frequently featured in medical journals of note, including JAMA. Gordon and Maureen traveled widely, especially in England and France.  Gordon was a lifelong sports fan, particularly of college football, and he attended hundreds of games over his lifetime, including many with his family. Gordon was also an avid military history reader, in particular naval battles. Throughout his life he enjoyed classical music, especially J.S Bach and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Gordon was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church and often assisted with readings at his church, Concordia Lutheran. Most of all, Gordon was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.  

 

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 49yrs, M. Maureen Murphy; and daughter, Allison Anne Murphy.

 

Gordon is survived by sons, Kris (Maureen) Murphy and Jonathan Murphy; grandchildren, John, Matthew, Christopher and Catherine Murphy; brother, George (Donna) Murphy; sister, Diantha (Michael) Siebert; and numerous extended family and friends.  

 

The family will greet friends from 5-7pm on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd. Kettering, OH 45429A funeral Service will be held at 10am on Friday, March 15, 2024 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 250 Peach Orchard Ave. Oakwood, OH 45419. Burial at Woodland Cemetery.
