Harrison Campbell Berkeley, Jr.

BERKELEY, Harrison Campbell, Jr., age 88, died peacefully in his Oakwood home on Sunday, January 1, 2006. He was born January 13, 1917 in St. Louis, Missouri. As a boy he lived in New York City and Paris, France before moving with his family to Dayton in 1927. Mr. Berkeley attended Oakwood High School. He graduated from the Episcopal High School in Virginia and went on to Yale University where he was treasurer of the class of 1940, and received a degree in Chemical engineering. During WWII, Mr. Berkeley was commissioned Lt. JG in the US Navy from 1943-1945. He served as Chief Navigator on the Destroyer Gamble in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign. After the war, he was employed by Specialty Papers and later by Vulcan Tool as Vice President and head of Production Tube Cutting. He co-founded the Association for Manufacturers and Tube Cutting and was given a Lifetime Achievement award for his work in this field. Mr. Berkeley was a member of Ye Old Buzz Fuzz Club and the Miami Valley Hunt and Polo Club, where he served as President from 1963-1964. He was a volunteer tutor for adult literacy in Dayton from 1990-1999. Mr. Berkeley “Hutch” was known to all as a true gentleman and an optimist in all things. His modest demeanor and wonderful, jovial personality will be sorely missed by his loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Wilshire and his brother, Griffith. He is survived by his two children, Anne C. Berkeley and her daughter, Dinah Alice and Van H.W. Berkeley and his wife, Donna. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, January 13, 2006 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave., Dayton with Rev. John F. Koepke III officiating.
