HENKEL, Harry "Don", age 93 of Centerville, passed away July 4, 2012 at home with his family.
Out of high school, he began working for General Motors. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy. Don was a member of Tau Beta Pi, the honorary engineering fraternity. During his lifetime membership in the American Society of Metals, he was elected a Fellow in 1979 for distinguished contributions to the field of metals and materials.
Don received various patents in his field, was recognized as Dayton's 12 Outstanding Engineers and Scientists for 1979, was singled out to receive a "Boss" Kettering Award for Outstanding Inventions in 1978, and received an Engineer of the Year Award from Delco Air. He had many hobbies including chess, golfing, birding, reading and traveling throughout the world.
Preceded in death by brothers, William and Norman Henkel and sister, Dorothy Alden. He is survived by wife of 69 years, Lillian; sons, Don and David (Chris) Henkel; daughters, Margaret Henkel and Mary Jane (Richard) Hall; grandchildren, Lora, Lisa, Jeanna, Brent, Karl, Hannah, and Jacob; great grandchildren, Justin and Rachael; brother, Robert Henkel.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 2:00 PM at ROUTSONG FUNERAL HOME, 81 N. Main Street, Centerville, Ohio. Burial will follow in Centerville Cemetery. Family will receive friends back at the funeral home from 3:00-5:30 PM.
