Harry Guion EBELING, formerly of Oakwood, died at Lincoln Park Manor on Saturday, July 14, 2018. Son of Philip C Ebeling, Esq. and Helen Guion Ebeling Stratton, Harry was born in Dayton, Ohio on August 6, 1932. He graduated from Oakwood High School in 1950. In 1954, he graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, where he was president of the student body & a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. Immediately following graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force, in which he served as a pilot in the Strategic Air Command until 1957. Upon completing his military duty, he attended law school at The Ohio State University and was conferred the degree of Juris Doctor in 1959. He then joined the law firm of his father, Pickrel, Schaefer, & Ebeling, focusing on real estate, creditor's rights and business law. Harry was married 61 years to prominent community volunteer Martha Bowman Ebeling, who predeceased him in 2016. Surviving are children Leisa Lowrey and husband Jon, of Jasper, Indiana; Mark Ebeling, of Dayton, Ohio; and The Very Reverend Amy McCreath and husband Brian, of Boston, Massachusetts; grandchildren Robert Lowrey (Heather), Thomas Lowrey, Gabriel McCreath and James McCreath. He was predeceased by a brother, Philip C. Ebeling, Jr. Harry has been dubbed "Mr. Oakwood" for his continued dedication to the preservation of Oakwood's history and supporting its educational excellence into the future. He is a founding member of three local organizations--the Oakwood Schools Foundation, the Oakwood Historical Society, and the Stage Wright Friends, taking major leadership roles in all. He was named Super Volunteer of the Oakwood Historical Society in 2000. Harry was honored by the Dayton Bar Association as Barrister of the Month and was active in the Lawyers' Club. He has served on the board of the Mental Health Association, was a steadfast volunteer for the Planned Parenthood Book Fair & Loft, past Master of Far Hills Lodge F. & A. M., Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton and Senior Warden of St. George's Episcopal Church. He was honored by receiving the Oakwood High School Distinguished Alumni Award in its inaugural year, 2008. Harry's study of the history of Oakwood culminated in the publishing of his book, entitled An Oakwood Scrapbook. Proceeds from its sale benefit the Oakwood Historical Society. He regularly writes articles for The Oakwood Register. Services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 33 West Dixon Ave., Oakwood, at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 29, with private inurnment immediately thereafter in St. Paul's Columbarium. The Rev. John Merritt Atkins will officiate. Following the inurnment, the family will receive friends in the Parish Hall.
