Helen H. Jackson

JACKSON, Helen (Hollis), age 93, of Centerville passed away on Friday, July 22, 2011. Helen was born in Germantown, Kentucky on November 20, 1917 to the late Laura and Benjamin Hollis who returned to the Dayton area in 1919. She attended Franklin Elementary School her first two years then her family moved to Centerville, Ohio in 1925. Helen graduated from Centerville High School in 1935. She was always active in band, orchestra, chorus, and church choir. In 1936, Helen married Omer Jackson and attended Miami University. Following Omer’s death in 1973, she graduated from Sinclair Community College and received a full scholarship to University of Dayton where she continued her music education. Starting in 1973 she began teaching piano and organ at Dayton Piano and Organ, Hauer Music, Kettering Adult School, and at her home in Centerville. She was a charter member of Rod & Reel Club and Centerville-Washington Twp. FOE. Helen was also a member of the Dayton Music Club, Ohio Music Teachers, Dayton Piano Teachers, and served as judge at many music festivals. She was a deacon at South Minster Presbyterian Church, a member of the Village Mother and later the Spoilers & Pamperer’s Grandmothers Club. Helen was the first secretary at Ida Woller School and Vice-President and agent at Cooper Insurance Agency. She was a founding member of Centerville-Washington Twp. Historical Society. Preceded in death by parents, Laura and Benjamin Hollis; husband of 37 years, Omer Jackson; and sister, Nell. Helen is survived by daughter, Connie Miranda; grandson, Ryan Brookhart; granddaughter, Lori Baker; great-grandsons, Anthony and Joey. The family will greet friends from 5:00-7:00PM on Monday, July 25, 2011 at ROUTSONG FUNREAL HOME, 81 N. Main Street, Centerville, OH. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at ROUTSONG FUNERAL HOME, Centerville, with Rev. Dr. Jackie Nowak officiating. Burial in Centerville Cemetery.
