Helen J. Shaffer

SHAFFER, Helen J. (Nee Mountz) passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 5, 2006 with family by her side. Born in Clay City, KY on December 9, 1920, Helen grew up and lived in Dayton all her life. She retired from Rikes after 15 years of service. Helen was extremely creative and talented and was an accomplished seamstress and artist. She enjoyed photography, gardening and painting, and never met a dog she didn’t love. She was preceded in death by her parents, Taulbee P. and Nora C. Mountz Sr., her husband, Elwood R. Shaffer and 2 brothers, Taulbee P. Mountz Jr. and Thomas C. Mountz Sr. Helen is survived by her 2 daughters, Carolyn (Lester) Edgecomb of Baldwin City, KS and Beverly Pleskota (Dale Huggins); 2 grandchildren, Mark (Therese) Edgecomb of Lawrence, KS and Rebecca Christener of Manhattan, KS; 3 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Christener, and Camaron and Lincoln Edgecomb; dear friend, Ruth Swartzel, who was “the sister I never had”, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors, and of course her beloved pets. Helen’s family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers who were such good friends to Helen. She greatly enjoyed their time together, and they enriched her life. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 8, 2006 at 1:00 PM at the Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering, with Rev. Gordon Brown officiating. Burial in Glen Haven Memorial Park Cemetery. Family will receive friends Friday one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.
