HOFFERBERTH, Herbert William, age 90, of Dayton, passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2016. Herbert was born on September 30, 1925 in Dayton to the late Herbert and Catherine Marie (Hirsekorn) Hofferberth.
Herb's mother has waited 81 years to be reunited with him following her passing.
He joined the United States Navy at 17 years old. He was in from July 1, 1943 through September 3, 1946 and served as a Lieutenant. He stayed in the Navy Reserve until the 30th day of June 1961. He was a navigator in WWII, taking the sick and wounded to the Red Cross to be stabilized in the hospital.
Herbert worked for NCR for 25 years and played very little golf on the NCR golf course but would have loved to play more, but working, fixing his house, and cutting his grass took up most of his time. He worked in research and helped develop the "no carbon" paper. Herbert later worked 17 years for Appleton Paper Co. in Dayton. He was the district sales manager for business paper at Appleton. He was always on time and took only one sick day in 42 years of work.
He never said a mean word to anyone. After retiring he enjoyed housework, yardwork, and painting. Herbert and his wife Mary Ellen also enjoyed attending Mass together, and to cook.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth; nephew, Jim; and dear friend, "Berry" Smith.
Herbert is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ellen (Cathcart) Hofferberth.
A funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Mary Ellen would like to thank the VA Hospital for the wonderful care they took of Herb.
Condolences and other remembrances may be sent to the family at www.routsong.com.
