age 97, of Kettering passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2007, at Hospice of Dayton. Herschel was born on May 9, 1909, in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. He attended grade school in Toledo, Ohio, and graduated from Harding High School in Marion, Ohio. He retired from the Frigidaire Division of General Motors and later from the National Alliance of Business. He also managed the Edward R. Godfrey Foundation from its inception until recently. He was preceded in death by parents, Otto and Ethel Headley. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Viola Peacock Headley; daughters, Suzie (Frank) Holloway and Diana (Karl) Stein; grandchildren, Chip (Leeann) Holloway, Chris (Urmila) Holloway, Skip (Jill) Stein, Jennifer Stein, Kim Holloway, and Kirk Stein; great-grandchildren, Lily, Keller, Molly, Jack, and Jenna Lee Holloway, and Kody, McKenzie, Karson and Olivia Stein. Herschel had graduate degrees from the Ohio State University. While at Ohio State, he participated in various activities, including Sigma Nu and Beta Alpha Psi fraternities, Varsity ‘O’, Varsity ‘A’ (gymnastics team), and the Scarlet Mask and Strollers. He was always active in community activities, having been a member and held offices in most of the following organizations and philanthropies: Ta-Wa-Si Club, Kettering Rotary, Criterion Club, TOM Club, United Way, Red Cross, Symposiarchs of America (organization of national fraternity members and college graduates), Dayton Metropolitan YMCA, and the Miami Valley Council of Boy Scouts (recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.) Herschel was a recipient of the Presidents’ Club Legion of Honor Award for his outstanding community service and concern with civic affairs, as shown in the picture engravings of various civic leaders on the Chamber of Commerce Walk of Fame in the Dayton Convention Center. Herschel was a member of the Oakwood United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 2, 2007 at 10:30 AM at Oakwood United Methodist Church, 206 E. Hadley Ave., Oakwood with Rev. Brian Thie officiating. Family will receive friends from 4-7:00 PM on Thursday, February 1, 2007 at Routsong Funeral Home, 6 Oakwood Ave., Oakwood. Burial in Marion Cemetery in Marion, OH on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund at the Oakwood United Methodist Church 206 E. Hadley Ave., Oakwood, OH 45419 or to the Herschel K. Headley Fund c/o The Dayton Foundation, 2300 Kettering Tower, OH 45423.
