NEWMAN, Howard, 93, of Centerville, passed away after a brief illness, August 29, 2010. Born November 5, 1916, in Forest Green, Mis souri to the late Howard and Antonia Newman, he is survived by his wife of 31 years, Maxine Newman, daughter Nanette Guindon, and son Bruce Guindon (Sue), and three grandchildren, Peter, Tim, and Claire. While working through the Economic Depression in 1937, Howard developed a passion for motorcycles and speed, competing in and winning Hillclimb Competitions on a 45-cubic inch Harley Davidson. Then came the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Monday following Dec 7th, 1941, Howard was in line at the recruiting office and entered pilot training for the Army Air Corps. He became an instructor pilot in the T-6 and then P-40 fighter plane, before transitioning to P-39 and then P-51 fighter squadrons in Florida. He supported the post war effort by flying surveillance missions over Japan in 1946, where he began writing his first poems. In 1947 he transferred to the Air Force Reserve in Sacramento, California. Howard switched his focus to real estate and private flying. He met his wife in June, 1974, and settled in Southern California. He moved from California to Centerville OH in 2000 to be closer to family. Howard elected to join the Catholic Church on Easter 2001 at the age of 84. He continued driving until he was 90 years old, and moved to the Liberty Retirement Center in 2008. Visitation will be at 9:30 followed by a Memorial Mass at St Francis of Assisi, 6245 Wilmington Ave, Centerville at 10:30AM, Thursday, September 2, 2010.
