Jack Singerman

July 22, 1928 — November 22, 2016

Jack Singerman, dearly loved by his family, friends, campers and staff at YMCA Camp Kern, November 22, 2016, quietly journeyed from earth to eternal life with Christ, to whom he'd given his life. We grieve that we can no longer converse face to face with this great man of life, service, and wisdom, but rejoice in knowing that our faith in Christ will reunite us one day in heaven. Jack and Marilyn, married 65 years, have resided in Kettering, OH, for 43 years. Jack was born in Barnhill, OH, to Jack Singerman Sr. and Anna B. (Golder) Singerman. His precious wife, Marilyn, currently residing at 10 Wilmington, Dayton, OH, is receiving the encouraging support of their three children and family: Rev. Jeff (Barbara), DRCongo; Scott (Leigh) of Weathersfield, CT; Diane (Dr. Jay O'Flynn) of Dayton, OH; grandchildren: Dr. Ryan (J.K.) of Ft. Wayne, IN; Rev. Kevin (Victoria) of Fairborn, OH; Kari (Rev. Joshua Ortega) of Kettering, OH; Katie (Sean Potito) of Springfield, MA; Logan and Kyle of CT; seven great grandchildren: Jacqueline, Darren and Michael of Ft Wayne, IN, Rachel, Josiah, Micah of Fairborn, OH, Shepherd Ortega of Kettering, OH; and cousin, Rheba Rainsberger of New Philadelphia, OH. Jack graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1946, and Heidelberg College in 1950, where he met Marilyn as a freshman while he was a senior. They married August 5, 1951, at First Methodist Church in Massillon, OH. In 1950, Jack began his YMCA career as Physical Director in Alliance, OH, moving on in 1956 to work in the Canton, OH, YMCA. Jack, Marilyn, and their young family moved to El Paso, TX, in 1959, where Jack worked for his father-in-law and uncle in real estate and insurance. In 1961, Jack moved to the Dayton YMCA to direct Camp Kern, outside Lebanon, OH, in Oregonia, which was the highlight of his life. Even in his last days he spoke often of the camp and his desire to raise project funds for the camp's advancement. In 1974, Jack was named Vice President in charge of all camping programs. Leaving Camp Kern in 1976, he planned, fundraised, and built Countryside YMCA in Lebanon, OH, and served as the Executive Director for 5 years. The Warren, OH, YMCA benefited from his leadership as Executive Director between the years of 1981-1985. The final days of his YMCA career were spent in Cleveland, OH, as Vice President. Dearly loved and appreciated in YMCA work, in 2004, Jack was presented the E. L. Kohnle Humanitarian Award for his many years of leadership and support to the YMCA of Greater Dayton. In 2010, the Chambers Chapter of YMCA Retirees presented Jack with the James E. Swormstedt True Grit Award. As a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Jack served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and accepted the responsibility as Business Administrator for ten years. He co-chaired with Chuck Horn for Camp For Kids Who Can't, raising money for camperships for underprivileged children. Jack was a Rotary Club member in good standing in every city in which he and Marilyn resided. Jack passionately loved Marilyn, treasured every member of his family, loved life, lived to serve others, spoke with wisdom, had a gift of raising money for great causes, respected all people, was a man of integrity with a giving heart and kept his word. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered. Jack's memorial service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 2:00 pm at Christ United Methodist Church, 3440 Shroyer Rd., Kettering, OH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack's name to YMCA Camp Kern, 5291 State Route 350, Oregonia, OH, 45054, to send needy children to camp.
