James Blair Peoples, M.D.

February 13, 1945 — July 19, 2002

age 57, died at Miami Valley Hospital July 19 after a brief illness. Dr. Peoples was the Elizabeth Berry Gray Chair of Surgery at Wright State University School of Medicine. He was a remarkable member of the University and Dayton communities since 1979. An Altoona Pennsylvania native, he completed medical school at New York University and his General Surgical training at The University of Pittsburgh. After serving as a Major in the United States Army Medical Corps, he joined the faculty at Wright State University in 1979. He assumed the position of Chairman of General Surgery and Residency Director in 1988. Being remembered as an excellent surgeon, teacher, and leader highlighted his career. Dr. Peoples oversaw the training of thousands of medical students and resident physicians. Along with this he authored an extensive number of publications and initiated numerous research projects. An international authority on surgical diseases, Dr. Peoples brought notoriety to himself and the University. Nationally he was on many committees and was frequently consulted . His awards and honors are many and include Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons, membership in Phi Beta Kappa, and Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Peoples was also active in the community and was an active supporter of various organizations including Planned Parenthood, the Dayton Art Institute, and numerous other notable organizations. He was an avid railroad historian and enthusiast spawned by his childhood connection to the '' Horseshoe Curve '' and the Pennsylvania Railroad. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed many outdoor pursuits that were shared with many close friends throughout his life. His immediate family includes his loving wife of 25 years, Kathleen Peoples; daughter, Jessica Lynn Ouellette; grandchildren, Anna and Sarah of Manchester, New Hampshire; sisters, Betsy Abercrombie of Herndon, Virginia, and Nancy Guthrie of Charleston, West Virginia. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. His family would like to thank the many professionals at Miami Valley Hospital for their excellent care during this unexpected and tragic illness. Visitation will be held at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering on Monday, July 22, 2002, from 3:00 to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, 33 West Dixon Ave, Dayton, Ohio at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, July 23, Revs. Jack Koepke and Richard M. Connor co-officiating. Contributions can be made to The James B. Peoples, MD Dept. of Surgery Fund, Wright State University School of Medicine, 1 Wyoming Street, Ste. 7000 WCHE, Dayton, Oh 45409. A graveside service will be held in Pittsburgh, PA at the Braddock Catholic Cemetery on Thursday, July 25, at 11:00 AM. Rev. Ron Fleming officiating.
