HOLVERSTOTT, James C. ("Jim"), age 88 of Dayton, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017.
Jim was born in Dayton on May 19, 1928 to James and Miriam Holverstott.
Jim was preceded in death by Katherine his beloved wife of 48 years, and is survived by his daughters; Mary, Jean (John), and Margaret.
Jim was raised in Xenia, OH where he graduated from St. Brigid High School. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy, attended Aviation Fundamentals and Electrician Schools, and was stationed at Patuxent River, MD as an Aviation Electrician engaged in tactical tests. Jim was later stationed at the Naval Air Station at Norfolk, VA with the Air Anti-Submarine Squadron 24 aboard the USS Wright CVL, USS Saipan CVL and USS Palau CVE, and completed his military service with the Air Transport Squadron 22 at Norfolk.
After his Honorable Discharge, Jim earned his Associate Degree of Electrical Engineering Technology from the University of Dayton, and was employed by the United States Air Force at WPAFB as an Aircraft Installation Electrician.
Jim then joined the University of Dayton as an Electronics Technician engaged in the pioneering work which became the University of Dayton Research Institute. Early assignments took him to Nevada and Eniwetok where he worked on nuclear weapons effects research. Jim went on to become the lead technician for the UD Research Institute Materials Evaluation Laboratory conducting technical research on many types of materials including plastic composites and adhesives. With promotion to Chief Technician, Jim provided administrative management for UD Research Institute Nonmetallic Materials research at WPAFB. During the subsequent years, Jim was involved in managing the entire spectrum of materials research for the UD Research Institute located at the Materials Laboratory, Air Force Wright Aeronautical Laboratories at Wright-Patterson. Jim retired from UD after 40 years of service.
Jim's hobbies included woodworking and reading, as well as boating, fishing and relaxing at Grand Lake St. Mary's.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00pm on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Immaculate Conception Church, 2300 S. Smithville Rd., Dayton.
Burial at Calvary Cemetery.
