James Patrick Joseph Martens, MD, age 45 of Centerville, Ohio passed away on April 11, 2022. Patrick was born May 20, 1976 in Wiesbaden, Germany to Patrick and Karen Martens. He graduated from Toledo Central Catholic High School in 1994 and earned a Business Bachelor’s degree from Miami University. Patrick continued his education earning a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He then went on to orthopedic surgery training at University of Cincinnati Hospital. After completing a clinical fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Martens and his family moved to Huntsville, AL. There he joined the SportsMED Orthopedic Surgery & Spine Center where he treated his patients with care and made many friends. The family returned to Ohio in 2014 and Patrick began working as the foot and ankle surgeon with Orthopaedic Institute of Dayton. He was known for excellent bedside manner, unique sense of humor and for whistling through the halls.
Patrick enjoyed fishing, golfing, and kayaking with friends and family. He was a sports fan and closely followed the Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys. Patrick had a special ability to focus and develop any skill he wanted to perfect. Many have described him as down-to-earth, honest and brilliant. He was a proud father to his amazing children, Morgan and Nolan. Everyone who knew him will miss him dearly.
In addition to his parents Patrick is survived by his wife of 21 years, Jennifer; daughter, Morgan and son, Nolan; brothers Shawn (Missy), Erin (Holly), Brian (Leydibell), and Trevor Martens; grandmothers Ruth Gehrlich, Kathy Martens, and Carol Shafer; father-in-law and mother-in-law Bill and Karen Schoultheis; sisters-in-law Trudy (Mike) Martini, Melanie (Mickey) Fraasman; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers James Gehrlich, John Martens, Richard “Dick” Shafer, and his beloved dog Jimmy B.
A celebration of life will be held at Centerville Community Church, 10688 Dayton-Lebanon Pike, Centerville, Ohio on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at 10:00 a.m.
A mass of resurrection will be held at Saint John XXIII Church, 24250 N. Dixie Hwy, Perrysburg, Ohio on Saturday April 23, 2022 at 10:00 a.m., where the family will begin receiving guests at 9:00 a.m.
