JONAS, Jan (Georgeanne) nee Hanzel, age 67, passed away Thursday, May 13, 2010. A graduate of Wooster High School (1960), Jan received her B.A. from The Ohio State University, M.S. and Ed.D. degrees from Indiana University, and attended the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University. During her career, she worked as a student personnel administrator at both Indiana University and the University of Wisconsin. Jan held numerous posts at Cuyahoga Community College, including Provost/Vice President. She was the Executive Director of Kids Voting Ohio from 1992-1995 and worked as a higher education consultant, including serving as an evaluator for The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. A Phi Beta Kappa, Jan was listed in Who's Who in America and Outstanding Young Women of America, received an Innovator of the Year Award from the League for Innovation in Community Colleges, and was a participant in the Identification Program for the Advancement of Women in Higher Education Administration. Personally, she was an avid reader, bird watcher, sailor, gardener, cook, bridge player, and an editor (par excellence!), as well as a patient, meticulous, kind, caring woman and good friend. She is preceded in death by her parents George and Grace Hanzel; and in-laws Milton and Ruth Jonas. Jan is survived by her loving husband Stephen Jonas of Centerville; sister-in-law Paula (Jim Wetters) Jonas of MI.; nieces Elissa Jonas of OR. and Susan (David) Bojanowski of MI.; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; godchildren Stephen and Stephanie Khoo; friends Cheng Hor and Lee-Khuen Khoo of TN., Bill Smith of Dayton; and her beloved "puppy" Koko. Contributions, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Steve & Jan Jonas Transfer Scholarship Fund at the Sinclair Community College Foundation (444 West Third Street, Dayton, OH 45402). A Memorial Celebration of Jan's life will be held on Wednesday, June 2, at 2:00 p.m., at Cox Arboretum, 6733 Springboro Pike, Dayton, Ohio 45449. Fellowship with family and friends will begin an hour prior to the celebration. Bright colorful dress is appropriate. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.routsong.com
