YARGER, Janet Arlene (Seelig) passed away peacefully on Friday, July 15, 2011, at the age of 86.
A native Daytonian, Janet graduated from Fairview High School and attended Miami University. In 1944, she married William “Bill” Yarger, a World War II flight instructor and pilot. Janet was a devoted mother of three sons, and a champion of community involvement.
She served as president of the Dayton Women’s Club, served on its Board for many years, and left a legacy there by spearheading the forming of a foundation to perpetuate it. In addition, she served as chairwoman, president, and board member of numerous other organizations including LaSertoma of Dayton and the Junior Board of Goodwill.
After her husband’s death in 1997, she continued to attend the summer reunions of his Marine Corps Division, and began volunteering in the offices of Carillon Historical Park. In 2005, she earned well-deserved recognition in the Park’s “Courier” newsletter for donating over 800 hours of service.
Janet thoroughly enjoyed her membership in bridge, golf, and investment organizations as well, often in a leadership role. In spite of her active life outside the home, Janet’s greatest dedication was to family.
Her husband of over 50 years, William P. Yarger, and her parents, Bernice J. and Fred O. Seelig, preceded her in death. Many survive her: her three sons, William F. Yarger, of St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Richard J. (and wife Barbara) Yarger of Yakima, WA, and Rodney R. (and wife Stacey B.) Yarger of Dayton; her six grandchildren, Amy L. (Yarger) Remy (and husband, Brock) of Yakima, WA, David J. Yarger of Hood River, OR, Fred Yarger (and wife, Katie) of Denver, CO, Stephanie E. Yarger of New York, NY, Hallie M. Yarger of Philadelphia, PA, and Heidi S. Yarger of Dayton; her sister Elinore (Seelig) Thuermer of Williamsburg, VA; and one great-granddaughter, Madeline Anne Remy of Yakima, WA.
A service celebrating the life of Janet Arlene Yarger is scheduled at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 27 at the Mausoleum Chapel of Woodland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the same location one hour prior to the service beginning at 10:00 am. Interment private.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Women’s Club of Dayton Foundation or Shriner’s Hospital for Children. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.routsong.com.
