Jean Butler Griffith-O'Connell

GRIFFITH-O'CONNELL, Jean Butler, age 80, passed away peacefully Saturday January 19, 2013 surrounded by her husband, Jack O'Connell and her four sons John, Kevin, Edmund, and Gregory. Jean Marie was born to Edmund J. Butler and Marie McElligott on August 15, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois. Jean was a graduate of Trinity High School, River Forest, Illinois, class of 1950. She graduated from Bowling Green State University 1954. After college graduation, Jean became a school teacher in Chicago and continued to teach in Kettering upon arriving in Dayton after her marriage to John William Griffith in 1956. After the births of her four sons, Jean returned to her career at The Carriage Trade as the Manager and Buyer. She later purchased L. Slayden Davis Interiors, Inc. in 1978 later changing the name to Oakwood Interiors, Inc. Jean flourished as an interior designer for the next 25 years and enjoyed working with many Dayton area businesses and families in creating attractive, elegant environments. Jean was a parishioner for 45 years at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church. She was a member of Dayton Women's Literary Club, Christ Child Society, Dayton Junior League, and The Hamlets Theater Group. Jean was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and friend. Preceded in death by her first husband, John William Griffith; parents, Edmund J. Butler and Marie McElligott; uncles, Robert Butler and Maurice Butler; and aunt, Alice O'Donnell. Jean is survived by her husband, John J. "Jack" O'Connell; four sons, John (Anne Marchese), Kevin (Julie Rindler), Edmund (Anne Barnet), and Gregory (Michael Marin); grandchildren, Holly, Emily, Luke, Kelly, Claire, Leah, Amy, John, Carly, George, Molly; stepdaughters, Colleen (James Kennedy) and Eileen (Dr. William Clark); stepsons Kevin (Pamela Hangen), Thomas (Catherine O'Brien), William, and Michael (Kelly Johnson); and step-grandchildren, John, Kelly, Daniel, Patrick, James, Jacqueline, Erin, Katie, Caitlyn, Michael, Megan, Nichole, Nicholas, and Lauren. Family will greet friends from 4:00-8:00pm on Friday, January 25, 2013 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 East Stroop Road, Kettering. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, 3033 Far Hills Ave., Kettering with Fr. David Robisch officiating.
