FAHRINGER, Joan Libby, age 80 of Centerville, passed away on Friday, November 8, 2013 after a long, brave battle against cancer. She was born on December 12, 1932 to Dana Marshall Libby and Helen Fechtenburg Libby in Orange, New Jersey.
Joan grew up in New Jersey and spent her summers in Maine with her numerous Libby family aunts, uncles and cousins. She was an avid skier, swimmer and tennis player and enjoyed acting and directing community theatre. Joan loved her family dearly, spending time with her children and grandchildren gave her much joy. She loved the outdoors, especially gardening, and reading and playing Bridge. Joan traveled the world sharing incredible experiences with her companion, Tom. They took cruises to Bermuda and to South America, from Santiago Chile, around the horn to the Falkland Islands, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and Rio. They drove across South Africa, from Capetown to Kruger National Park and the game preserves. Recent travels included San Francisco and Napa Valley, Orlando, Maine, Cape Cod, Hawaii and ten days in Cuba.
Joan received her BA from Douglass College, and her MS Education from University of Bridgeport, CT. Joan taught history, social studies, English and drama in junior and senior high schools in New Jersey, Massachusetts and Connecticut. She also taught reading, study skills and English at Norwalk Community College and developmental reading and writing at Sinclair Community College. Joan was very active in all of the communities she lived in. She served on the League of Women Voters Board of Directors in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Dayton, Ohio. She chaired study committees on education, taxation, local planning and recreation, healthcare, and Voters Service. Joan was the League of Women Voters representative on the Montgomery County Parks and Recreation Task Force, served on the Muse Machine Board, the Virginia Hollinger Memorial Tennis Club Board, the Dayton Playhouse Board, the Friends of Wegerzyn Board and was a volunteer at WDPR.
Preceded in death by her maternal grandparents; paternal grandparents, Albion D. and Carolyn Libby; sister, Doris Atno; and daughter, Susan Pettit. Joan is survived by her son, Karl Fahringer and his wife Roxanne; daughter, Kristine Leonard; grandchildren, Nicholas Fahringer, Rebecca Fahringer, Kyle Leonard, Kerry Leonard and Abby Leonard; beloved companion, Thomas Norwalk and his daughters, Leslie and Laura; and many cousins.
Family will greet friends on Friday, Nov. 15 from 5:00-7:00pm at ROUTSONG FUNERAL HOME, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 10:30am at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Wilkinson St., Dayton. Final resting place is David's Community Mausoleum.
