PATTERSON, John H., 86, of Christiansburg, Virginia and formerly a longtime resident of Kettering, Ohio, died Thursday June 30, 2016 in Blacksburg, Virginia, after a short illness.
John was born on July 17, 1929 in Toledo, Ohio. He lived in Findlay, Ohio until 1937, when he moved to Dayton.
John graduated from Wilbur Wright High School in 1947. He began carrying mail for the United States Postal Service on Flag Day in 1949 and continued as a letter carrier for over 35 years until his retirement in 1984. He was stationed at both the NCR and Wright Brothers Post Office locations in Dayton, and was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Local Branch 182. On March 6, 1954, John married Margaret Hayes, who died in 1976. Maggie was the love of his life and his family rejoices that they are once again reunited in heaven.
John was blessed with a heart filled with love for his family and friends and was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan, rejoicing when the Reds won the World Series in 1990.
He was a member of Church of the Cross United Methodist in Kettering, Ohio for over 50 years.
John was also preceded in death by his brother, Donald E. Patterson, Sr. as well as many dear family members and friends.
Surviving are 3 daughters, Sandy Hancock of Christiansburg, Virginia, Susan (Jeff) Nelson of Bellaire, Ohio and Barbara (Dan) Geedey of Pennsylvania; 4 grandchildren, Jeff Nelson Jr., Maggie Hancock, Jennifer (James) Shaffer, and Jason Smith.; 3 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Janet Patterson of Lebanon, OH; nieces, Beckie Hayes and Kim (Patrick) O'Connell; and nephew, Donald (Maureen) Patterson, Jr.
A deeply felt thank you to special friends Nancy Hoffman, Chuck and Sue Bryan, and Jean Wagner for many years of care, support and friendship offered to both John and his daughters, and to Reverend John Whitaker for spiritual support and guidance.
The funeral will be at 11:00am on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd. Kettering. Friends may call from 9 to 11 am on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bear Creek Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Church of the Cross United Methodist, 3121 Wilmington Pike Kettering, OH 45429.
