John Robert Haggerty, Jr. of Birmingham, MI joined his heavenly family on July 23, 2023. Born on November 16, 1943, John was preceded in death by his parents John Robert Haggerty and Mary Matilda Haggerty of Vermilion County, Illinois as well as two brothers, Paul Thomas and William Dean. He is survived by his beloved wife Jane; a son John Patrick Haggerty and wife Danielle of Dayton, OH; a daughter Erin Maureen Haggerty of Glenwood Springs, CO; and a son Michael James Haggerty and wife Stephanie of New York, NY. He was a proud and loving grandfather of Henry, Collin, Adi, and Amina.
John and Jane were wed in Hinsdale, Illinois on December 14, 1963 and were constant companions until his death. John stated that he could not have married a more pleasant wife and mother of his children.
A proud graduate of Eastern Illinois University, John held executive positions with National Homes Acceptance Corporation of Lafayette, IN; American Fletcher (Banc One) Mortgage Corporation of Indianapolis, IN; and Comerica Bank of Detroit, MI. John was designated a Certified Mortgage Banker (CMB) of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America.
He spent much of his career as a Mortgage Banker arranging financing for various Midwest housing developments constructed to serve low- and moderate-income families. He also championed diversity, inclusion, and justice as a diversity committee member for Comerica Bank, First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, MI, and Detroit Neighborhood Housing Services. John also served on the board of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, Indiana.
John was an elected elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, MI and Zionsville, IN.
He and Jane enjoyed traveling with close friends and cherished their time with family. He enjoyed spectator sports and competed in track and field into his middle years. He also seldom missed an opportunity to fly-fish with close friends.
John loved his spouse Jane, their children and grandchildren, and their dearest friends.
A service will be held on Thursday, August 17 at Robison Chapel in Catlin, IL. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the service at 11:00 a.m.
