John J. Vollbrecht

age 89, of Kettering, formerly of Oakwood, died July 29, 2001. He was born June 19, 1912, in Dayton, the son of John H. and Edith (Platt) Vollbrecht. John began working at Rikes as a high school co-op, where he became the buyer for lamps, luggage and where he was the buyer of silver for more than 40 years until his retirement after 50 years with Rikes. He was widely recognized for his knowledge of both antique and modern silver. After his retirement, he established Arjay Silver Appraisals. John served in the U.S. Navy, Pacific Theater during World War II. During his son's participation, he coached beginning baseball and was active in Boy Scouts and the Oakwood Band Parents. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior. Survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth (Kershner); 3 sons, John W. and his wife, Kathleen of Herndon VA; Robert M. of Hamilton and Thomas D. and his wife, Linda of Kettering; 4 grandchildren, Cynthia Marie and Christina Lynn Vollbrecht of VA; Mary and her husband, Israel Tilk of Cincinnati; Andrea and husband, Kevin Unangst and great-grandson, Andrew of Seattle. Also survived by cousins Rosemae Marsh and Virginia Shierloh of Dayton; Norman Sullivan of Gahanna as well as numerous nieces, nephews and close friends. Services 11 AM Wednesday at the Routsong Funeral Home, 6 Oakwood at Irving Ave, Pastor Gary Eichorn officiating. Burial Woodland cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 PM Tuesday.
