JOY, John R. of Beavercreek, Ohio died April 30th after living an honorable life and serving his country and community with courage, compassion and character. He was 73. A native of Quincy, Illinois, John grew up creating adventures on the Mississippi River. He loved aircraft of all kinds and joined the US Air Force at the age of 17. His career spanned 56 years of global success serving the USAF on active duty, as a civil servant, and later as a private consultant. In 2009, John spearheaded a collaborative humanitarian effort to provide soccer balls and Beanie Babies for the USAF to distribute to the children of war-torn Iraq. Though he officially retired a few times, he never quit working. A craftsman of wood, restorer of VW Bugs and appreciator of good food, John enjoyed music, gardening, fishing, biking, rollerblading, and travel. He delighted in making people laugh. He will be missed by many. John is survived by his wife of 51 years, Catherine; his children Mary, Michael and Judy, his son-in-law Michael, his granddaughter Katelyn, his brother Jim, his sister Sandi, and his beloved dog, Susie. He was preceded in death by his mother Margaret, his father John, and his sister, Anne. A memorial service will be held at 6pm on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at Routsong Funeral Home 2100 E. Stroop Rd.
