Sunrise March 22, 1954 – Sunset January 5, 2025
John Stephen O'Neill passed away on January 5, 2025, at home in Kettering, Ohio, at the age of 70. Born on March 22, 1954, in Miami, Florida, John—known as Steve to his family and New York friends—was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis just five days after birth. Despite the challenges of his diagnosis and a grim prognosis, John defied all odds and lived a life defined by resilience, humor, and unwavering determination. He often joked that his epitaph should read, "The doctors finally got it right."
John grew up in Watertown, New York, before moving to Dayton in 1976 to work as a computer programmer for NCR Corporation. A true fighter throughout his life, John faced numerous health challenges but never allowed them to define him. Instead, he became a source of inspiration and guidance for many parents of children with cystic fibrosis, offering mentorship and hope through his own experiences. John's strong faith in God sustained and nurtured him throughout his health battles
John was known for his remarkable memory and the deep connections he nurtured with friends spanning decades. He had an extraordinary ability to remember birthdays, children's names, and countless other details that made those around him feel valued and cherished. He often described his mind as a "steel trap," a testament to his sharp intellect and caring nature.
John dedicated much of his life to fighting cystic fibrosis. He served on the board of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and contributed tirelessly to the Charity Concert for Cystic Fibrosis held annually at the Fraze Pavilion in Kettering, Ohio.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Lechner O'Neill; his mother, Constance Exley O'Neill; daughters Katie O'Neill and Maura O'Neill; stepdaughters Danielle Brower and Alissa Deines; grandsons Noah and Ethan Brower; and brothers Tim O'Neill, Chris O'Neill, and Patrick O'Neill. He was predeceased by his father, John Frederick O'Neill.
A celebration of life service will be held at Southbrook Church when confirmed, 9095 Washington Church Road, Miamisburg, Ohio. A memorial in Watertown NY will be held in early summer.
Please consider a donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in John's honor in lieu of flowers.
John’s legacy of strength and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him.
