John T. Hoban

August 4, 1934 — August 26, 2008

Hoban, John Thomas, age 74, beloved husband of Evelyn for almost 50 years, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2008 following a valiant battle with cancer. He was a beloved father to Penny Harvey (and husband Joe), Mike Hoban (and wife Lisa) and John Hoban, grandfather to Sarah, Joshua, Matthew, Ian, Luke, Reilly and Duncan, godfather to David and Todd, and cousin to Bernice (and Norris) Crook, Gordon (and Carol) Gabram, and Donna (and Bob) Franz and their children. John rejoiced in a successful lifetime built on a strong relationship with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, a rich family life, and the excitement of several business careers. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 4, 1934 and married Evelyn Coolidge on November 22, 1958. He had a career in advertising, communications and public relations that took him from Cleveland to Roanoke, VA and then to Dayton. He retired from the United Methodist Association, Dayton as Director of Communications in 1998, and had continued working for Otterbein Homes, Lebanon, Ohio as a Development, Marketing and Public Relations associate until recently. He loved sports, particularly basketball and baseball. He was a natural coach, and coached the Holy Cross Lutheran Church high school age team to victory as Consolation Champions of the National Lutheran Invitational Tournament played at Valparaiso University (Indiana) in 1970-71. He kept enduring relationships with this team, and went on to coach other community and school teams, as well as serve on the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Basketball Association. More recently, he served as a Dayton Dragons usher, where he enjoyed encouraging the young players. John had a lively interest in history (particularly the American Civil War) and travel. He and his family enjoyed many wonderful trips together over the years. John is remembered for his exuberant 'joie de vivre', sense of adventure, creative flair, and loving support of family and friends. Visitation is Friday evening 5-8 pm at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Road, Kettering. A celebration of John's life will take place at 10:30 am at Mighty Fortress Lutheran Church, 2841 E. Dorothy Lane, Kettering. If desired, memorials can be given to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton OH 45420, who were wonderful in their care and support of John and his family in the last weeks of his life.
