John Willard Hope

April 6, 1918 — June 2, 2005

HOPE, John Willard, born in Dayton, OH, the third of five children, on April 6, 1918 to Peter Ward and Mary Margaret (Heiser) Hope, died on Thursday, June 2, 2005 at Hospice of Dayton. John graduated in 1937 from Roosevelt High School and proudly served during WWII in the U.S. Army, the 37th Division-Battery A-136th Field Artillery. He retired from Ohio Bell Telephone Company in 1980 after 36 years of service. John was a member of: Centerville United Methodist Church, Far Hills Lodge #784 F&AM (Past Master), Belmont Chapter #555 OES (past Worthy Patron), Trinity Chapter #44 Royal Arch Masons of Ohio, Valley of Dayton Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Antioch Temple A.A.O.N.M. S of Dayton, Commandery #80 Knights Templar Association of Miamisburg, Ohio, Antioch Temple Past Masters Club and was a charter member of the Antioch Shrine golf league. Preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Mary Hope, infant sister, Emily, wife, Catherine M. (Wenger) Hope, daughter, Brenda Marie Hope-Cheatum, infant granddaughter, Hope Elizabeth Gilley and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Robert and Eleanor Wenger. Survived by daughter and son-in-law (with whom he resided) Ellen and Bob Gilley of Kettering, OH; son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Lois Hope of El Paso, Texas; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Ward and Edith Hope of Centerville, MI, (formerly of Brookville, OH); brother and sister-in-law, Boyd and Sylvia Hope of Ft. Meyers, FL; sister and brother-in-law, Joy and Jack Bucher of Hamburg, NY; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and many caring and loving friends. John was a caring and devoted family man as well as an avid golfer and fisherman. He will be greatly missed by all whose life he has touched. The family would like to thank the following doctors and their staff who have cared for John during his lengthy illness; Jan Bernie, Rakesh Gupta, Marian Llenado-Lee, Manish Sheth, Robert Kiefaber, David Romeo, Randall Schaffer, Denise Kroll R.N. of the EECP lab as well as Dr. Rau of Kettering Hospital and her staff, and to the Hospice of Dayton for the wonderful care, support and dedication given to John. The family will receive family and friends at the Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering, OH, with visitation from 4-7:00 PM Monday, June 6, 2005 with Eastern Star and Masonic Services at 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:00 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Ray Mertz and Dr. Stephen Fenwell officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave. Dayton, OH 45420 or Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45229-3095. Interment at Woodland Cemetery. Condolences and or flowers may be sent to the family via the website at www.routsong.com.
