Jonathan D. Murphy

MURPHY, Jonathan D., age 55, of Oakwood, OH, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2024. Jonathan was born on February 19, 1969 in Dayton, OH to the late Gordon and Maureen (nee Hocter) Murphy. Jonathan was a lifelong Daytonian and graduated from Archbishop Alter High School. Jon continued his education at Miami University, earning his B.A. in Printmaking in 1992. He then studied Photography at Columbia College in Chicago, IL graduating with his M.F.A in 2000. Jon completed his education at Wright State University, earning his Master of Education degree in 2005, before starting his career as a teacher in Dayton area schools, both public and private. He was an active parishioner and longtime member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Oakwood, where he volunteered as a reader and Sunday school teacher. Jon was also a longtime assistant librarian at Dayton Public Libraries. A devoted son, brother, and uncle, Jon always relished his time spent with family. In his final years he spent significant time with his beloved niece and nephews, including cruises, baseball and football games, and a memorable trip to Florida. Earlier in his life Jon was a avid European traveler and also spent a year in Miami University’s Luxembourg program. Jon’s gentle and loving personality will be missed by all who knew and loved him. 

He is preceded in death by his loving parents, M. Maureen Murphy and Gordon K. Murphy; and sister, Allison Anne Murphy.

Jon is survived by his brother, Kris (Maureen) Murphy; nephews, John, Matthew, and Christopher Murphy; niece, Catherine Murphy; uncle, George (Donna) Murphy; and numerous extended family and friends. 

The family will greet friends from 4-6 pm on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Routsong Funeral Home, 81 N. Main St., Centerville, OH 45459. A funeral Service will be held at 10 am on Friday, January 3, 2025 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 250 Peach Orchard Ave. Oakwood, OH 45419. Burial at Woodland Cemetery.
